Dr. Oz:  "Salt is being rediscovered as a miracle mineral that heals."

Himalayan Pink salt is a type of rock salt found in the Punjab region of Pakistan, near the foothills of the Himalayas. It has been found to be the purest salt found on earth. This unrefined, unprocessed raw salt is mined by hand from salt caves that formed 250 million years ago as ocean salt settled into geologic pockets.

This crystallized salt contains mostly 90% sodium chloride, but also contains up to 84 minerals and trace elements, such as potassiummagnesium, and calcium, as well as lesser-known minerals like strontium and molybdenum.

Salt is being rediscovered as the “miracle mineral that heals,” according to Dr. Mehmet Oz, because it naturally has detoxifying, antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory properties that can contribute to the loosening of excessive mucus and improving the immune system. The healing properties of salt have been known through the ages, from the Dead Sea to the Himalayan salt mines. Even Hippocrates, the father of medicine, prescribed salt water for breathing ailments.

Salt therapy has been found to positively impact three primary health areas centering around the respiratory system, skin issues, and mental health concerns. The treatment is simple: sit, relax, and breathe.

Salt therapy has been found to have a positive effect on:

  • respiratory issues such as colds, allergies, asthma, bronchitis, COPD, cystic fibrosis, emphysema, hayfever, rhinitis, sinusitis, smoking damage, and snoring;

  • skin conditions such as acne, dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis;

  • mental health issues such as stress and anxiety, depression, insomnia, postpartum blues, Post Trauma Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD);

  • as well as other issues such as Lyme disease.

Salt crystals are an ideal source of negative ions. Negative ions are oxygen atoms charged with an extra electron. They are odorless, tasteless, and invisible molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain environments; e.g., near waterfalls, at the beach, and in a salt cave.

While salt therapy is not a cure, it is an all-natural way to manage ailments. Dr. Norman Edelman, Senior Scientific Advisor to the American Lung Association, suggests that potentially, it could be more than just a placebo effect. Dr. Edelman suggests that it's possible that salt therapy offers relief to these symptoms. Dr. Jennifer Ashton, ABC News Senior Medical Advisor, pointed out on “Live on GMA: Project Wellness,” salt is already being used in nebulizer treatments to help breathing. The risk of using salt therapy is pretty low. Salt therapy may very well be “one of the best kept secrets.” For some recipients, salt therapy has been called “life-changing.”

Why It Works

High concentrations of negative ions have been proven to be essential for high energy and a positive mood (Thayer, 1996). Marian Diamond, a professor of neuroanatomy at the University of California, Berkeley, found levels of negative ions are inversely related to levels of serotonin in the brain. Originally found to help asthma patients, later they were discovered to effect Serotonin levels in the bloodstream, stabilize alpha rhythms, and to positively affect reactions to sensory stimuli.

Dr. Albert P. Krueger, a microbiologist and experimental pathologist at the University of California, found that an astonishingly small quantity of negative ions could kill bacteria and quickly take them out of the air so that they were less likely to infect people. This is particularly useful to patients recovering from burns in particular.

In 1985, a European research project exposed over 100 out-patients at a mental health clinic to negative ionization for just 40 minutes per day. After only a few sessions, 50% of depressive patients reported a return to normal; 75% of headache patients had their pain disappear, 80% of insomnia patients returned to normal sleep patterns, and 100% of anxiety sufferers said their symptoms had disappeared.
